Writing Experience – I have been writing since I was a child.  I started writing in my diary when I was in the 4th grade and I kept a journal throughout high school.  My diary and then my journal was my best friend.  I am part of a writing group.  We meet every Wednesday evening from 6 – 8pm at the Fork Cafe on Highway 61 in Charleston, South Carolina.  Fork is open for lunch only and the owner, Margaret, is part of our writing group.  She and her husband allow us to meet in their wonderful restaurant.  If you are a writer and you are not a part of a writing group, I strongly recommend you find one.  Our group of writers come from all walks of life and write a variety of pieces.  We have a great time and learn a lot from each other.  Wednesday evenings are special times in my life.

I also meet once a month with another writing group. This group only has writers who want to be published. Mary Johnston, my editor, is the facilitator of this group.

Personal –  I am happily married and have been for over 12 years.  I am the oldest girl in a family of seven children.  I have one older brother, three younger sisters and two younger brothers.  My mother, Bernie, was born on the island of Guam.  My biological father’s family is Sicilian.  My step-father who I refer to as my “real” father played a pivotal role in my life; he is from Maryland.

Professional – During the day, I am an Environment, Safety and Health professional.  I have been in this career field for over thirty years. I am also a writer.

Thanks to the ASSE Women in Safety Engineering for recognizing Sherry Dixon, CSP as one of the Top 100 Women Making a Difference in Safety http://www.fsmmag.com/Articles/2011/08/Daily%20Articles/ASSEs%20Women%20in%20Safety%20Group%20Honors%20100%20Women.html

Education/Certifications – I have a BS in Occupational Education from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale IL and a MA in Human Resources Development from Webster University, St. Louis MO.  I am a Distinguished Toastmaster with Toastmasters, International.  I am also a Certified Safety Professional with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

I am blessed to be one of your younger sisters and want to be just like you when I grow up! I cannot wait to read “Natural Destiny”. Thank you sis for sharing this wonderful story that we were fortunate to be results of the same.

Everything I have read is both sad and inspiring. I had never heard this part of history, but to read about these life challenging events was interesting and heartfelt. It must have been a terrible time, that truly has made a wonderful difference in all her childrens’ lives. Love it!

      Hi Sandy,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your comment. I am confident that Natural Destiny will also be available soon. I am waiting patiently to hear from the agent who was referred to me by the editor with whom I met last year at the 2010 Words and Music conference in New Orleans. I am also considering entering my book in the 2011 William Faulkner – William Wisdom Creative Writing contest. And, I have begun writing a non-fiction book which seems to me to be a sequel to Natural Destiny. Stay tuned …

    Hi Sherry,

I’m eager to read both Natural Destiny and the sequel! Have you thought about putting up a “Contact Me” page on here with your email address? I think your readers will probably want to learn a lot about you and your personal life after reading the book. 🙂

      Hi Sandy,

Yes, I have thought about installing a “Contact Me” function. Just waiting on help from my technical service person who also happens to be my son. Thanks for your comment. I submitted my book this past weekend in the 2011 Words and Music Creative Writing Contest. Please keep your fingers crossed for me!

I just got off the phone with Tony Leon Guerrero. I saw your write-up of Natural Destiny on the National Organization of Chamorro Veterans in America and I’ve ordered a copy from Amazon. I too, was a product of Manenggon on Guam. I was born in 1940 and spent a few weeks in Manenggon. Please send me an e-mail so we can communicate better – I’m not into all the “social” stuff and having the world reading everything.
